Helpful Tips For Creating Your Own Custom Washers

So you need just one damn washer and it has to be a certain size and shape. You've scoured all your local sources and have had zero luck. So now you have come to the realization that you are going to have to use a custom washer. Your choices in that case are two. Have it made or make it yourself.

You Can Make Your Own Custom Washers

Hey relax! You may be in luck because believe it or not you can make your own custom washer in your kitchen, without any specialized tools. Sound crazy? Well read on and see for yourself.

The First Step To Making Custom Washers

Your first step is to create the model of the actual washer that you are going to make. Call around to your local jewelers, dentists and dental labs and try to pester someone into selling you or giving you some sheet dental modeling wax. Make enough calls and you'll get some.

Make a Wax Model Of Your Custom Washers

Now take a razor knife and what ever else you can scrounge up and shape a "wax washer" to your exact specifications out of wax. Warm it in your hands to make it soft and pliable and stick it in your refrigerator or freezer to make it hard. In fact, you can even file your wax model after it has sat in the freezer a while.

Creating a Two Part Plaster Mold Of Your Wax Model

Now fill a small cardboard box half full of plaster of Paris and set your wax model carefully in it so it lays flat. Now let the plaster dry and cure. While the plaster is still soft though make at least two indentations in it.

Can You Picture It In Your Head Now?

Next give the surface a thing coat of grease, fill the box the rest of the way up and after it cures put the two halves apart. The indentations that you made will now have corresponding dibits and they will ally you to put the two halves back together perfectly.

Are Lead Custom Washers Too Soft?

Now take out the wax model and carve a channel to its negative in both sides of your plaster mold. You can now heat up lead in a pan on the stove and pour it in the mold. If lead is too soft for your purposes, you can take the wax model to a jeweler and have one made from brass.
