Adapting Your Schedule

Some speakers seem to always have it made. But most will tell you that such a rosy scenario is not always an accurate depiction. And scheduling when it comes to public speaking, whether those that a speaker has to make because of problems on his end or confusion by those who asked him to speak, should not be neglected.

That's why adapting your schedule has to be a consideration like everything else a speaker deals with. The situation may involve a change in travel plans, the flexibility of speaking at a later date, speaking earlier in the day, or other considerations.

What are some of the issues that have to be considered in adapting your schedule? Among them:
??A flexibility and understanding if a speaker is asked to speak later during a conference or at a different date altogether. This may occur as a result of an organization realizing that they have another event planned for that date, low response, the selection of a speaker to address a more current issue, or other reasons
??The ability to quickly get out of other commitments if the original time for speaking has changed
??Speakers need to check before committing, and then rechecking within hours after agreeing to speak, that there are no conflicts in their schedule as it relates to meetings, travel, family commitments, etc. Once any possible conflicts have been identified, it's incumbent on them that they subsequently determine if those situations can be adapted so as to allow them to speak

Adapting your schedule also includes consideration of travel plans as it relates to traveling by car to a speaking engagement. A speaker may think that it will only think him 15 minutes to arrive at a speaking venue, but should be prepared to change his schedule the day he speaks to allow for an least an hour to arrive in case there are traffic problems (with other travel plans also adjusted based on how long it would ordinarily take him to arrive by car at his engagement).

A speaker also needs to be able to adapt his schedule for situations in which audiovisual equipment is not working, handouts are unavailable, etc. The importance of adaptability in these situations involves being able to move on while the problems are corrected and then return to another point in his presentation.

There is one other consideration for adapting your schedule and it involves not attempt to overcompensate with remarks that are irrelevant. The danger of this occurs when a speaker is asked to speak longer than he had anticipated.

Rather than deciding on a more feasible alternative by allowing for an extended question and answer period or simply dismissing his audience early (remember quality, not quantity!) , he attempts to fill time. But this can be a big mistake, because he is likely to bore his audience.
