Divorce - How Will You Fill the Emptiness?

This week I was listening to Beth Moore. She is one of my favorite speakers, authors, leaders. One of the things she said really struck me. "All excess is rooted in emptiness."

I thought how true that is when you think about it. Stop and think about people you know who have a lot of "stuff" or are always shopping or buying new things. Every time you talk to them they are telling you about the latest electronic device, their new big screen tv, computer, car, furniture, next vacation. Maybe they are always wearing something new, replacing something that is not even outdated or worn out. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying you should not be able to have a nice home, furnishings, wear fashionable clothes and have new things.

Excess is not limited to the things we own. The excess in our lives can also come in the form of addictions, alcohol, drugs, food, shopping, exercise, work, pornography, volunteering, chaos, or whatever you do to try and fill up the emptiness you feel inside. Excess can take many forms.

Let's begin by taking an honest look at your own life. Where are you in the divorce process? Have you experienced the feeling of emptiness? If so, how have you dealt with it? Have you developed a new habit or become excessive in some area of your life? What is it that makes you feel better?

I bring this topic up for three reasons. First, you may be trying to fill this emptiness with excess and not even realize it. Second, when children are involved, divorced parents often get into excess with their children. Third, the holiday season promotes excess.

Before you get caught up in excess trying to fill the emptiness of divorce, I encourage you to take a close look at yourself. How are you dealing with your emptiness? Are you avoiding it and filling it up with some addictive behavior, whether good or bad? Have you been excessive in some area? What is the motive behind your behavior? Is it healthy? Is it under control? It might be time to seek counseling and deal with your emptiness, if you have fallen into excess or some type of addiction. If you are currently in counseling, be sure and talk to your counselor honestly about any addictive or excessive behaviors you have developed or that may have escalated. The time to deal with excess and addiction is now.

For parents, avoid getting into excess with your children. Do not make it a contest between you and your ex-spouse as to who will buy your children the latest electronic game(s), the latest cell phone, the most "stuff." Too often parents take their guilt and insecurity (emptiness) over a divorce and try to "buy" their kids affection and loyalty. What your kids really need is your time and attention, to know you love them and care about them.

The holiday season can be a time of excess for all of us. Companies hit us hard with their marketing, leading us to believe they have the perfect gift and we "need" their product to be happy, fulfilled, appear successful, loved, accepted by our peers. At this time in your life when you may be vulnerable to excess, looking to fill the emptiness left by divorce, try to be a conscious buyer.

Think about the motives behind your actions. As you go out shopping, ask yourself if you or your children, family, friends really "need" all the "stuff" you are buying? Are you buying it to make yourself feel better or is it a gift that is needed? Can you afford it? Are you spending more than normal? Are you eating or drinking more than usual? Why? Are you working too much, volunteering for every opportunity that arises, to keep yourself busy and avoid feeling?

If you see yourself falling into excess in any area of your life, stop, be still, think about the potential emptiness you are trying to fill. What can you do to fill that emptiness in a healthy way? Exercise can be healthy with many benefits unless it is done in excess. Volunteer opportunities abound during this time of year. In moderation it can be a healthy and beneficial way to fill the emptiness you are experiencing. To fill your emptiness look for ways to give or be a blessing to others, ways for you to grow or develop personally, take a class, join a group, learn a new skill, take up a new hobby, pursue a passion, be creative, try something new.

I am a Christian Life Coach specializing in Broken Marriages. I work with men and women across the country who are on their path to recovery from divorce, to empower them to create a future they truly desire. When we are accountable to someone we are more likely to succeed. When what we do is recognized, cheered and affirmed, we perform at a higher level. People getting divorced rarely have someone to hold them accountable and support them during this time of transition from married to single. As a coach who has walked the path of divorce, and been a child of divorce, it is my passion and desire to come alongside others on this journey to help them make this transition and create a future filled with hope
